Day 3 January 7, 2011

Grand Cayman

The Amsterdam pulled in to Spots Bay on the South side of Grand Cayman at about 0700 and dropped the hook. The Captain announced on the PA that the usual anchorage off Georgetown was too rough for tender operations so he elected to move to the anchorage in the lee of the island. There were negotiations with the taxi union to permit shuttle busses to run passengers in to the city and after a short wait everything was in order and about 1000 we tendered ashore. We hitched up with Joan and her van, $55 hour and went to the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Gardens on the East side of the Island. Joan walked with us as we viewed the orchids, tropical plants and blue iguanas. Then we drove back to Georgetown to buy walking shoes for Julie. (Her walking shoes are headed for Peru on the Prinsendam.) Having been here before there wasn't much else we wanted to see so it was back to the anchorage, a quick tender back to the ship, a hamburger pool side, a nap, tea on the veranda and finally at 5 the sail-away with champagne on the veranda.
The water is clear, the temperature in the 80's, the air clean and the people pleasant.
